lithium battery IEC 62133-1:2017 and IEC 62133-2:2017

lithium battery IEC 62133-1:2017 and IEC 62133-2:2017

 On February 7, 2017, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) officially released the safety standard IEC 62133 for single cells and batteries (including lithium and nickel batteries) for portable electronic products IEC 62133-1:2017 and IEC 62133-2:2017.

This is a major upgrade and revision of the IEC 62133 standard following the release of the second edition of IEC 62133 in 2012. The newly released standards IEC 62133-1:2017 and IEC 62133-2:2017 will replace IEC 62133:2012 as the international requirement for the safety requirements of single cells and battery packs containing alkaline or non-acid electrolytes for portable electronic products.

Compared with IEC 62133:2012, IEC 62133-1:2017 and IEC62133-2:2017 have some important changes in the technical content:

1). IEC 62133-1:2017 - Monomer batteries and batteries with alkaline or non-acid electrolytes for portable electronic products - Part 1 Nickel system:

- Incorporating button battery requirements, previously IEC62133:2012 standard is not included button batteries.

2). IEC 62133-2:2017 - Monomer batteries and batteries with alkaline or non-acid electrolytes for portable electronics - Part 2 Lithium system:

- Incorporate button battery requirements, previously IEC62133:2012 standard is not included in the inclusion of button batteries,

- Updated 5.6 battery assembly battery requirements,

- Added mechanical testing [vibration, shock] (7.3.8.1, 7.3.8.2);

- Add IEC TR 62914 as a reference.

The IEC62133 standard has always been the internationally accepted safety requirement for batteries and battery packs for portable electronic products. Many countries have adopted or quoted the IEC 62133 standard as the market access requirement for domestic battery products. After the update of the IEC 62133 standard, it is expected that many countries will upgrade the corresponding battery standards in the future.
